About us
Old MacDonald's Farm is owned by Don and Christine MacDonald. Don is an accountant working in business within Lusaka and Christine is a gynecologist. They have two biological daughters, Sarah and Rachel, and an adopted son, Nico, as well as all of the other young people that live on the farm! Don and Christine moved to Zambia in 2001 with Don's work and became involved in the lives of boys living on the streets soon after they arrived. Living near the main shopping centre - Manda Hill - they couldn't help but be aware of the plight of the children who hung around the traffic lights next to the centre and Don began visiting them in the evenings, taking food and clothes to them. It soon became clear that although the children were being well fed for one day in the week more needed to be done. In December 2002 they first took in Nico. After a few weeks of care and medical attention they didn't feel able to send him back to the streets or to an orphanage as he had become one of the family, so they decided to adopt him, not knowing that this would be the start of much bigger things. After Nico had settled in, the MacDonalds opened their house to the street kids on Sundays offering them lunch, a chance to bath, wash their clothes and swim and started offering some of the children a chance to come to the house for lessons during the week. Gradually, through the Sunday lunch program, they met and got to know more of the boys well. They told the boys if any had trouble or problems they should come to the house, this offer was taken up by some of the boys who ended up coming and never leaving. In 2007, and the work was growing and Don and Christine needed more a place more suitable for their large family, they were able to buy the farm where they now live.
